LMU Rose Parade float entry celebrates school's centennial

By the time Shirley Griffin's eight-day Southern California vacation is done, the New Canaan, Conn., resident will have used half of it pulling grueling unpaid eight-hour shifts with dozens of strangers.

The mother of Loyola Marymount University junior Leslie Griffin, 20, spent much of Wednesday 15 feet in the air meticulously applying crushed rice to a reproduction of the campus chapel.

By day's end Griffin was tired. Her arms and shoulders ached. And yet she had reveled in every moment of her volunteer labor, helping decorate the Westchester school's Rose Parade float.

"I was a little precariously perched," Griffin said laughing. "You had to climb through the scaffolding to get on this little itty bitty ledge.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity," she added. "It's something you watched (on television) as a little kid. It's a cross between grade school arts and crafts and (summer) camp."

Except this particular arts and crafts project will be seen by an estimated crowd of more than 700,000 and tens of millions around the world Monday when the 123rd Rose Parade rolls along Pasadena's streets. By tradition, the parade and subsequent bowl game is pushed back a day when New Year's Day falls on a Sunday.

It's the first time the private Catholic institution has entered the parade since 1938.

The entry, 55 feet long and about 40 feet high, marks the culmination of the university's yearlong centennial

celebration.

It includes a soaring replica of the Sacred Heart Chapel bell tower, one of the oldest structures on campus, and a floral version of the William H. Hannon Library, one of the newest.

Also featured are the familiar LMU bluff letters that overlook Playa and Marina del Rey as well as a floral statue of a lion, the university's mascot.

The float will also include more than 12,000 roses and 7,000 gerberas, uncounted numbers of onion, poppy and lettuce seeds and

other organic materials.

"What a glorious thing, to tell your friends and family, `I decorated this,"' said Redondo Beach resident Cathy Dellacamera, a past president of the school's alumni association and a 1991 graduate. "It's pretty monumental to be part of something that happens once in a century."

Indeed, one couple among the hundreds of LMU volunteers working two eight-hour shifts a day in the Rose Palace, where Phoenix Decorating Company has 10 floats under construction, will have an extra special reason to remember the landmark float.

Crew Chief Craig Singer said on the first day of decorating, an unidentified young man got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend. She was seated on a float "kissing

bench," a reproduction of the wooden benches that dot the campus where many students have discussed their futures together.

"It was the cutest thing," Singer said. "She was in absolute shock. It was so romantic."

And she said "yes."

Singer, a no-nonsense Culver City resident overseeing the construction of what will be his 17th float in his 10 years as a crew chief, has exacting standards.

But he has been impressed with the vigor - and at times literal devotion - with which the LMU volunteers have approached their work.

For instance, a couple of devout Catholic ladies could barely contain their delight when they were directed to decorate the cross atop the faux chapel.

"For them it was like the Holy Grail," Singer said. "There has been days when the (volunteers) have been apologetic and thought they hadn't done enough work."

The LMU float is one of several with local ties in the parade, which this year has the theme "Let's Imagine".

Torrance-based American Honda is the parade sponsor and its float leads off the 8 a.m. parade. The city of Torrance will have its 58th float in the 2012 parade.

Meanwhile, Griffin has had so much fun decorating the float, her once in a lifetime trip could turn into more regular visits. She's discovered the existence of volunteer group the Petal Pushers, which helps decorate floats every year.

"I honestly would consider doing it again," Griffin said. "I really am having a ball. It appeals to my inner child or something."

Cole comes up big, Heat beat Celtics 115-107 (AP)

MIAMI ? Norris Cole stepped to the foul line with 9.3 seconds left, set to clinch the game as cries of "M-V-P! M-V-P" rained down upon him from the sold-out stands.

No, this wasn't a scene from his days at Cleveland State.

Taking over in just his second NBA game ? and with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh all on the floor, no less ? Cole scored 14 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter, including three huge jumpers down the stretch to save the Heat in a 115-107 win over the Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.

"You grow up and live for moments like that," Cole said.

James scored 26 points, Wade had 24 points, eight assists and four blocks, and Bosh scored 18 for the Heat, which led by 20 points midway through the third quarter before having its lead twice sliced to three points in the final minutes. And both times, Cole took passes from James and knocked down jumpers, keeping short-handed Boston at bay.

"He's got savvy," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "Great pickup."

Ray Allen scored 28 points on 8 for 12 shooting for the Celtics, while Rajon Rondo finished with 22 points and 12 assists and Keyon Dooling scored 18 off the Boston bench.

Through two games, Miami (2-0) has trailed only once ? by two points, for all of 14 seconds. Boston turned the ball over 24 times, and Miami turned those into 33 points.

"Any team you turn the ball over that much they're going to score on you," Allen said. "We just have to settle in on both ends of the floor. Whether you score or not, they're going to run down your throats."

Cole's jumper with 3:01 left gave Miami a 108-98 lead, most of which disappeared in the next 59 seconds, thanks to Dooling ? a former Heat guard. He scored seven straight points, including a 3-pointer with 2:02 remaining, cutting the Heat's lead to three. And when Boston got a stop on the next Miami trip, the Celtics looked for Dooling again.

But Wade stepped in front of a pass intended for Dooling, starting a play where James found Cole for another jumper, and Miami's cushion was back to 110-105 with 1:31 to play. A half-minute later, Cole struck again to restore the five-point edge, and Miami had the win.

"He's earned their respect," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Even though it's been a short period of time, about three weeks, because he's pure, he's all about the team. He's mature ... and he gets them the ball. You're always a popular guy when you find people when they're open."

Boston was again without forward Paul Pierce (bruised right heel), who worked out both Monday and Tuesday and is getting closer to a return. It won't come on Wednesday, however ? the Celtics have already ruled him out of that game in New Orleans, but there is some hope of Pierce being in the lineup when Boston makes its home debut against Detroit on Friday.

Maybe spurred by the new Eastern Conference championship banner hanging from the rafters, Miami came out flying.

A short bank shot by Wade made it 26-15 at barely the midpoint of the first quarter, setting the tone for an offensive bonanza the likes of which Boston typically doesn't allow. After a late flurry ? James setting up Wade for a lob, Wade missing at the rim but James trailing for a tip-in being perhaps the most impressive of Miami's highlight reel to close the second quarter ? the Heat took a 69-54 lead into the locker room.

That represented the most first-half points allowed by the Celtics since Feb. 8, 2005, according to STATS LLC.

Six straight points by James made it 85-65 midway through the third, and Miami was well on its way to a blowout. But then everything changed ? Boston went to a zone, and Miami's offense stopped in its tracks.

Feasting on Miami's second unit, with James being the only starter on the floor, the Celtics closed the third on an 18-6 run to make it 91-83 entering the fourth. The Heat missed their last eight shots of the quarter ? after having missed 14, total, in the first 32 minutes of the game.

Boston never got the lead down the stretch, though, thanks to Cole.

"We have confidence in whoever's on the floor at that time," James said. "For him to make those shots and come up big in a game like that, give credit to him."

NOTES: After two games, the Heat have 131 points in first halves this season. After three games last season, Miami had 130 first-half points. ... Celtics F Chris Wilcox didn't play in the second half because of a bruised left shoulder. X-rays were negative. ... The Heat said the luster of the matchup wasn't hurt by Pierce not being available. "We play the name on the front of the jersey, not the one on the back," Wade said. ... Celebrity sightings included Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush, rapper Rick Ross and retired tennis star Boris Becker.

Turkey: Strikes kill 35 people mistaken for rebels (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkish warplanes mistakenly killed 35 smugglers and other villagers in an operation targeting Kurdish rebels in Iraq, a senior official said Thursday, one of the largest one-day civilian death tolls during Turkey's 27-year drive against the guerrillas.

The killings spurred angry demonstrations in Istanbul and several cities in the mostly Kurdish southeast, and were the latest incident of violence to undermine the Turkish government's efforts to appease the aggrieved Kurdish minority by granting it more cultural freedoms.

Huseyin Celik, a spokesman for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party, said authorities were still trying to identify the dead, but that most were youngsters from an extended family in the mostly Kurdish-populated area that borders Iraq.

All of the victims were under age 30 and some were the sons of village guards who have aided Turkish troops in their fight against rebels, he said.

"According to the initial information, these people were not terrorists but were engaged in smuggling," Celik said, indicating that Turkey was ready to compensate the victims. "If there was a mistake, if there was a fault, this will not be covered up, and whatever is necessary will be done."

In Istanbul, police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse pro-Kurdish protesters denouncing the air strikes, the Dogan news agency reported. Dogan footage showed some demonstrators smashing glass panels at a bus stop and others throwing stones at a police vehicle near Taksim square, a transit hub adjacent to shopping and hotel districts. Plainclothes officers hustled or dragged away several protesters.

Earlier, the Turkish military confirmed the Wednesday night raids, saying its jets struck an area of northern Iraq frequently used by rebels to enter Turkey after drones detected a group approaching the often unmarked mountainous border. Border troops were on alert following intelligence indicating that Kurdish rebels were preparing attacks in retaliation for recent military assaults on the guerrillas.

The military said drones had detected a group approaching Turkey, apparently at a mountain pass that the rebels have used to smuggle weapons into Turkey, and that the military conducted strikes in areas where the rebels have bases far away from civilian settlements.

Pro-Kurdish legislator Nazmi Gur said earlier that most of those killed were teenagers making a living out of smuggling from Iraq into Turkey and claimed that officials should have known that Turkish smugglers would be operating in the area.

Video footage provided by Dogan on Thursday morning showed mourners, some crying, as they surrounded more than a dozen bodies that lay side-by-side and wrapped in blankets in the Turkish village of Ortasu.

Ahmet Deniz, a spokesman for the Kurdistan Workers' Party, as the rebel group is known, said earlier that the victims were among a group of about 50 people attacked on their way back to Turkey from Iraq's self-ruled northern Kurdish region. Most of the survivors were injured, he said.

"Those who were killed yesterday had no links to the PKK. They were only smugglers who were on their way back to Turkey from Iraq," Deniz said, using the rebel group's acronym.

"We were on our way back when the jets began to bomb us," the pro-Kurdish Firat news agency quoted one survivor, Servet Encu, as saying. "Five or six took refuge behind some rocks, but the planes bombed those as well. They all died behind the rocks."

Firat said some of the survivors rushed back to Ortasu for help and that its villagers then transported the bodies back to the village. Some of the bodies were carried to the village tied to donkeys or to mules, photographs obtained by The Associated Press showed.

Gur's pro-Kurdish party released a statement condemning "the massacre," and Turkey's main opposition party said it was "extremely disturbed" that civilians were apparently killed in the fight against the PKK.

Kurds, who make up around 20 percent of Turkey's 74 million people, have long felt marginalized in the country and many want autonomy in Kurdish-dominated southeast Turkey. Since Kurdish rebels took up arms in 1984, tens of thousands of people have been killed in the conflict with the state.

The rebels have long used northern Iraq as a springboard for hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets. This year, Turkey's air force has launched dozens of air raids on suspected rebel bases and other targets in northern Iraq and along the Turkish side of the mountainous border.

Turkish authorities said at least 48 suspected rebels were killed in two offensives backed by air power in southeast Turkey last week.

The government also has taken steps toward improving the standing of Kurds, including by allowing Kurdish-language institutes and private Kurdish courses as well as Kurdish television broadcasts. But it won't permit lower-level education in Kurdish.

The European Union, which Turkey is striving to join, has pushed the Turkish government to grant more rights to the Kurds. But EU countries also have urged Kurdish lawmakers to distance themselves from the PKK, which is considered a terrorist group by the United States and the EU.

Argentine president diagnosed with thyroid cancer (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) ? Argentine President Cristina Fernandez has thyroid cancer and will undergo surgery next month, her government said on Tuesday, adding that the cancerous cells had not spread.

Fernandez, 58, was easily elected to a second four-year term in October, vowing to deepen her unorthodox policies despite complaints from business leaders who say her heavy-handed management of the economy is stifling investment.

Fernandez was diagnosed with a papillary carcinoma that has not metastasized, said her spokesman, Alfredo Scoccimarro. The operation is scheduled to take place on January 4 and she is expected to take a leave of absence until January 24.

"The thyroid gland will have to be removed," said Buenos Aires-based cancer specialist Julio Moreno. "The prognosis is very good. The chances of being cured are 90 to 98 percent."

The cancer was detected last week during a routine check. Papillary carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer and normally affects people under the age of 40, especially women.

A skilled orator fond of glamorous clothes, high heels and make-up, Fernandez still wears black as she mourns her husband and closest advisor, former President Nestor Kirchner, who died late last year.

When Kirchner died, many thought it spelled the end of the couple's idiosyncratic blend of state intervention, nationalist rhetoric and the championing of human rights in grains exporting powerhouse Argentina, the world's No. 3 soybean supplier.

But Fernandez pulled off a remarkable comeback on the back of a brisk economic expansion and an outpouring of public sympathy. She was re-elected with 54 percent of the vote, promising to stay true to her policies despite objections from Wall Street and international investors.

Latin America's No. 3 economy is growing at nearly 9 percent a year. But a worsening global economic outlook combined with entrenched high inflation at home are seen reining in Argentina's growth to about 4 percent next year.

Fernandez is one of several Latin American leaders to have cancer. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez underwent chemotherapy earlier this year while Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo's lymphatic cancer is in remission.

And former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being successfully treated for a cancerous tumor on his Larynx, according to his doctors.

Aging Brains Match Youth in Some Mental Tasks

Since physical abilities decline as people age, many people think the elderly are also less able to perform mental jumping jacks as they age. New research indicates this might not be true with all brain-powered tasks: In some ways the elderly are fit to compete with their younger counterparts.

Both young and old brains take longer to reach decisions in some settings, the researchers say, because they make the conscious choice to choose accuracy over speed.

"Many people think that it is just natural for older people's brains to slow down as they age, but we're finding that isn't always true," study researcher Roger Ratcliff, of Ohio State University, said in a statement. "At least in some situations, 70-year-olds may have response times similar to those of 25-year olds." [5 Reasons Aging Is Awesome]

Brain games

The researchers studied how people of different ages performed when put through a battery of cognitive tests, which included guessing the number of asterisks on a screen (fewer or more than 50) and identifying strings of letters as either words or non-words.

The new research added young kids into the mix, from elementary-school age through college age. They found the very young kids slower at decision-making tasks, with performance improving with older groups. "Younger children are not able to make as good of use of the information they are presented, so they are less accurate," Ratcliff said. "That improves as they mature."

Individuals aged 60 and older also had a slower response time for these tasks, but the researchers found that instead of just taking longer to follow the same thought process as young people, the older people took longer to make sure they responded accurately. These older people even could be trained to respond quicker in some decision-making tasks without hurting their accuracy, similarly to younger adults.

"Older people don't want to make any errors at all, and that causes them to slow down. We found that it is difficult to get them out of the habit, but they can with practice," study researcher Gail McKoon, also from Ohio State, said in a statement. "For these simple tasks, decision-making speed and accuracy is intact even up to 85 and 90 years old."

Memory in old age

Some memory tasks do decline with age, though. "If you look at aging research, you find some studies that show older people are not impaired in accuracy, but other studies that show that older people do suffer when it comes to speed," Ratcliff said.

Previous research has shown that a mental facility called "associative memory" ? remembering two connected memories together ? declines as people age. There's still hope for other types of brain tasks, though. Perhaps not all brainpower declines at the same rate in the aging brain, the researchers suggest.

"The older view was that all cognitive processes decline at the same rate as people age," Ratcliff said. "We're finding that there isn't such a uniform decline. There are some things that older people do nearly as well as young people."

The study was published in the January issue of the journal Child Development.

Knicks edge Celtics 106-104 on Anthony foul shots

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

(AP) ? Carmelo Anthony and the Knicks know it will never be easy against the Celtics.

Not beating them in one game, and certainly not beating them for a division title.

But pulling out the kind of nail biter that's long gone Boston's way in this rivalry only reinforced the Knicks' belief that they can do it ? and even the Celtics see a difference.

Anthony scored 37 points, including a pair of free throws with the game tied and 16 seconds left, and New York survived a seesaw season opener Sunday to edge the Celtics 106-104.

"Most importantly for us, as a new team, we showed something," Anthony said. "We came together as a team. Even when we got down, there wasn't no frowns. Nobody was down. Mentally everybody was still up about it, and we willed our way to this win."

Amare Stoudemire added 21 points and Toney Douglas had 19 for the Knicks, who led by 17 in the first half, trailed by 10 in the fourth quarter, then pulled out a thrilling Christmas victory in the delayed opener to the 2011-12 season. Tyson Chandler blocked six shots in his Knicks debut.

Rajon Rondo had 31 points and 13 assists, nearly leading the Celtics back without an injured Paul Pierce. But Kevin Garnett missed a jumper just before the buzzer, the kind of shot Boston always seems to make against the Knicks.

"They seem to have a little swag and confidence behind them," Garnett said. "It's good for the city. It's good for the Knicks. I'm going to see how consistent they are with that, but for the most part Carmelo played really well."

Brandon Bass had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Celtics debut, and Ray Allen added 20 points.

Garnett finished with 15 points. He and Allen had a sleepy Christmas start, with Rondo keeping the Celtics in the game until they got going in the second half.

"I thought we were as soft as you could be in the first quarter and then I thought we joined in to the 2011-12 season, and from that point on I was pretty happy with the way we played," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought we competed well."

But it wasn't enough against the Knicks, who withstood a costly knee injury to first-round pick Iman Shumpert to beat the team that swept them out of the first round of last season's playoffs. Shumpert will miss two to four weeks with a sprained right knee ligament.

Pierce has a bruised right heel but hopes he can return Tuesday when the Celtics visit the Miami Heat.

Even without him, the Celtics fought back to tie it at 69 on Rondo's layup midway through the third quarter. They surged ahead by eight going into the final period after Bass scored the final six points, then extended it to 89-79 on Bass' jumper to open the fourth.

Anthony, who scored 20 in the second half, tied the game at 100 on a 3-pointer with 3:25 to play. It stayed tight until he was fouled on a drive with 16.3 seconds left, making both for a 106-104 lead. Rondo grabbed the rebound of Marquis Daniels' potential go-ahead 3-pointer to give the Celtics a final chance, but Garnett was off on his jumper, then appeared to shove the Knicks' Bill Walker away.

Coming off their first winning season in a decade, the Knicks added a defensive presence by signing Chandler away from the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks and have loftier expectations than they've seen in years. The original NBA schedule had them opening against Miami, but instead they got a chance to see if they've closed the gap against Boston.

"I think we wanted to come out and set the tone early," Stoudemire said. "It's a long year but this game was very important for us to get off to a great start."

Though the Celtics won all eight meetings last season, the Knicks have been listed some places as the favorites in the Atlantic Division, which the Celtics have ruled since their Big Three came together in 2007.

"Everybody knows how optimism kicks in before the season starts, but then once reality sets in after the first month of the season, we'll see," Pierce said before the game. "But it's definitely a possibility. I mean, they have the talent, but we have the talent, too."

But the Knicks will be without newcomer Baron Davis for a few weeks because of a herniated disc in his back, and now Shumpert is out, leaving little depth in the backcourt.

The Knicks led 49-32 with 7? minutes left in the first half before the Celtics cut it to 62-52 at halftime.

The first game since renovations began at Madison Square Garden included the usual cast of celebrities such as Alicia Keys, Chris Rock and John McEnroe, and some new confusion, as at least one Celtics player had to ask how to get to the court from the new visitors' locker room.

Notes: Rivers said Pierce may come off the bench when he does return, since he's had only one practice so far. ... The Knicks were without Mike Bibby, who dressed but didn't play because of a sore back. Reserve Jared Jeffries was lost during the game to a sore right calf and will miss a week or two. ... Stoudemire provided pregame breakfast to MSG staff in appreciation of the support in his first season with the team.

Does Mitt Romney Fare Better in Caucuses than Primaries? (ContributorNetwork)

One of the most memorable moments of the 2008 election was ex-Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's failure in the Iowa caucus, losing to dark horse candidate Mike Huckabee (the former governor of Arkansas) after blanketing the Hawkeye State with his wealth and campaign cash to the tune of $10 million, according to the Associated Press.

Romney never seemed to recover, blowing the lead in his backyard (New Hampshire) to John McCain, finishing an embarrassing fourth in South Carolina, before dropping out of the nomination contest. This may explain his absence from South Carolina, as reported by Holly Bailey from Yahoo's The Ticket.

The press had a field day with Romney's failures. But amidst all of these shortcomings, Romney did perform well in several states, even winning a few. The question is whether he fared better in the primaries or the caucuses. The answer could speak volumes about Romney's strategy in 2012.

To determine this answer, I looked at all of Romney's performances in the 10 caucus states, as well as the 19 primaries he placed in before dropping out. The data can be found in CNN's Election Center for the 2008 contest.

Romney did surprisingly well in the caucuses. Though he was upset in Iowa, he won eight of the ten caucus states, averaging 46.1 percent of the vote. These victories include Wyoming, Nevada, Maine, Alaska, Colorado, Minnesota, Montana and North Dakota. Each region was represented: New England, the West, the Midwest; only in the South was Romney shut out. He also amassed 176 delegates in the process from these caucus states.

The primaries were a different story. Romney only won three of the 19 primaries, including third and fourth place finishes in a number of these. In these races, he took an average of 32.58 percent of the vote, and barely half as many delegates as he did from the caucuses (though he entered twice as many primaries).

For those who keep score, a difference of means test reveals that Romney's results in caucuses was significantly better than his primary performance. Take Utah out of the equation (where he got 90 percent of the vote), and the disparity would have been even bigger.

What's even more embarrassing for Romney is that he barely got more than 50 percent in the state where he was a governor: Massachusetts (51 percent), and where his dad was a governor: Michigan (39 percent). Those were two states where he won a primary. One third of his primary delegates came from that third state where he took a primary (Utah).

So the good news is that Mitt Romney does pretty well in caucuses, despite what happened in Iowa four years ago. But he had better watch out for primaries, where his real failures were in 2008. Maybe that's why he's focusing more on the New Hampshire Primary than the Iowa Caucus, according to National Public Radio. With fewer caucuses and fewer delegates at stake in those states, it's not a bad idea to focus on his glaring weakness from 2008.

Judge issues warrant for sports agent Leigh Steinberg

Leigh SteinbergAn Orange County court commissioner has authorized a bench warrant for?Newport Beach sports agent Leigh Steinberg, who partially inspired the film "Jerry Maguire," but there are no plans to arrest him, court and law enforcement officials said Thursday.

Steinberg, 62, failed to appear in Orange County Superior Court on Dec. 15 for a debtor's examination, triggering the commissioner to OK the bench warrant on the condition that the party suing him pay the court fees, according to court spokeswoman Carole Levitzsky. Bench warrants typically lead to arrests when the subject is picked up for another crime, such as a traffic violation.

The Newport Beach-based Irvine Co., which filed a lawsuit alleging that Steinberg owes $1.4 million in back rent for office space in Newport Beach, did not pay the warrant fee, Levitzsky explained.

That means there is no warrant out for Steinberg's arrest, Levitsky said, and Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino confirmed that.

The warrant would become active, however, if the Irvine Co. pays the court fees.

Irvine Co. spokeswoman Erin Freeman declined to comment on the case.

Steinberg, in an interview with the Daily Pilot, said he failed to attend the court hearing based on advice from his attorney. He said he wants to set a new court date with counsel for his landlord.

T-Mobile Galaxy S II does battle with the iPhone 4S

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Bigger screen. Faster dual-core processor. And, of course, the speed of T-Mobile's 4G network. Those are but a few of the weapons available to the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II on T-Mobile's 4G network. That means faster, well, everything. And with T-Mobile's two lines for $49.99 each, faster doesn't break the bank, either. Take that, iPhone 4S.

Hungarian state TV employees on hunger strike (AP)

BUDAPEST, Hungary ? One of three Hungarian journalists staging a hunger strike said he hopes their protest brings more attention ? and an end ? to acts of censorship and increasing government meddling in state-funded media.

A media law that went into effect in Hungary on Jan. 1 has been severely criticized by international observers, and several modifications were made after complaints from the European Union because of its potential ability to restrict press freedoms.

One heavily criticized aspect was the centralization of the state media's news service, which eliminated much duplication among Hungarian state radio and TV stations, but also led to charges that the government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban wants to keep closer control over its contents.

"There is constant pressure from every government to try to influence public media ... but what this current group is doing is unprecedented," said Balazs Nagy Navarro, a foreign affairs editor at Hungary's state TV who has been drinking only water, tea and other liquids since Saturday.

"Stories are manipulated daily and (state television) has become a mouthpiece for the government," he said.

The hunger strike came after images of Zoltan Lomnici, a former head of Hungary's Supreme Court who is believed to have fallen out of favor with the government, were pixelated beyond recognition on state television two weeks ago.

That manipulation of the images angered state media reporters who want the service to stay impartial.

Compared to a country such as China, where content on state media is tightly controlled, journalists who work for state media in Hungary have been used to a relatively wide degree of independence and have not shied away from covering negative news about the government.

On Thursday, the director of Hungary's state news service, Gabor Elo, was fired and Daniel Papp, the editor-in-chief, reassigned. Last week, four other state media employees were reprimanded in the case.

Nagy Navarro welcomed the announcements, but said other senior officials should be ousted because of the constant meddling into journalists' work. As he spoke outside state television headquarters, supporters stopped by with bags full of fruit juice and soft drinks.

Two civilian activists have also joined the three journalists on the hunger strike. Nagy Navarro, who also leads a trade union of media workers, said he would continue the hunger strike as long as doctors allow him to or until more top editors are fired.

A spokesman for state media said the hunger strike had turned into a political act and that no other personnel changes were planned.

"We continue to study and analyze how to reform and improve the system of news production and news stories to avoid repeating such serious errors," said Laszlo Szabo, communications director of MTVA, the state Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund.

Szabo said the case of the pixelated former judge was an "unfortunate combination of circumstances," including "many professional mistakes ... and the rushed pace" of televison news. He said Elo would no longer be employed by any state-owned media, while Papp was stripped of one of his two posts and will remain as head of the documentary division.

Glam Media moves closer to IPO, filing seen in Q2 (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Glam Media, the women's lifestyle online publishing and advertising company, is close to selecting bankers to lead an initial stock offering slated for 2012, according to people familiar with the matter.

Investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are in the running to lead Glam Media's IPO, the people said, following a selection process that involved presentations from roughly a dozen firms.

While no final decision has been made on the exact timing of Glam's IPO, people close to the situation say the company is aiming to file a prospectus in the second quarter of 2012, with a potential offering slated for the third or fourth quarter of the year.

Glam Media declined to comment.

Glam's plans to float shares to the public come as several of its online peer companies have made similar moves.

On Tuesday, Jive Software made its Wall Street debut with shares jumping 25 percent on their first day of trading. Social game company Zynga is expected to price its IPO on Thursday.

Facebook, the world's No.1 Internet social networking company, is preparing for an IPO in 2012, a source familiar with the matter previously told Reuters.

Glam, which was launched in 2005, was the 10th most visited online property in the U.S. in October, according to comScore, with roughly 85 million unique visitors.

Glam was valued at $950 million when it acquired social networking service Ning for $150 million earlier this year, sources said.

The company, which works with more than 1,000 brand advertisers including Nike and Lexus, competes with Yahoo Inc and Google Inc in the online advertising market.

Glam is moving towards an IPO as it nears the 500 shareholder threshold, a rule which would require the company to file public reports of its financial performance by 2013, according to the sources.

Glam's moves to select IPO underwriters were first reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday.

The "bake-off" process in which banks pitch their services to handle Glam's IPO wrapped up a few weeks ago and Glam is currently deciding which firms will lead the offering. Bank of America, Citi and Credit Suisse are also in the running to have a role in the offering, according to the sources.
