The nation's weather

Wet and snowy weather will persist in the West as snow returns Sunday to the Northern Plains and upper Midwest. A strong low pressure system spinning over the Pacific will push another cold front onshore throughout the day. This system will bring rain showers to the Pacific Northwest and northern California, with heavy snow showers expected in the mountains. The Cascades may see 3 to 7 inches of new snow, and the Sierra Nevadas another 7 to 9 inches of snow.

Strong winds will develop ahead of this front, with gusts from 35 to 45 mph, up to 75 mph at the highest mountain peaks. High wind and winter weather advisories remain in effect in these areas.

Elsewhere, a low pressure system over the central and northern Rockies will advance eastward into the Plains, producing 1 to 3 inches of snow across the Dakotas and upper Midwest. Late Sunday, a cold front will develop south of this system, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms to the Mississippi River Valley. There is a slight chance storms will turn severe in the Tennessee Valley and mid-Mississippi River valley. The back side of this system will spread lingering snow showers over the Rockies.

The East Coast will see a break in wet weather as a low pressure system and associated frontal boundary moves offshore into the Atlantic. High pressure will build over the Northeast and extend down the East Coast, allowing for a dry and mild day before another system quickly approaches from the central U.S.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states ranged Saturday from a morning low of -25 degrees at Land O' Lakes, Wis., to a high of 91 degrees at Bonifay, Fla.

'Extinct' monkey rediscovered in Borneo by new expedition

Friday, January 20, 2012

An international team of scientists has found one of the rarest and least known primates in Borneo, Miller's Grizzled Langur, a species which was believed to be extinct or on the verge of extinction. The team's findings, published in the American Journal of Primatology, confirms the continued existence of this endangered monkey and reveals that it lives in an area where it was previously not known to exist.

Miller's Grizzled Langur (Presbytis hosei canicrus) is part of the small primate genus Presbytis, found across Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Thai-Malay Peninsula. In Borneo, P.h. canicrus is only found in a small corner of the county's north east and its habitat has suffered from fires, human encroachment and conversion of land for agriculture and mining.

The team's expedition took to them to Wehea Forest in East Kalimantan, Borneo, a large 38,000 ha area of mostly undisturbed rainforest. Wehea contains at least nine known species of non-human primate, including the Bornean orangutan and gibbon.

"Discovery of P.h canicrus was a surprise since Wehea Forest lies outside of this monkey's known range. Future research will focus on estimating the population density for P.h. canicrus in Wehea and the surrounding forest," said Brent Loken, from Simon Fraser University Canada. "Concern that the species may have gone extinct was first raised in 2004, and a search for the monkey during another expedition in 2008 supported the assertion that the situation was dire."

By conducting observations at mineral licks where animals congregate and setting up camera traps in several locations, the expedition confirmed that P. h canicrus continues to survive in areas west of its previously recorded geographic range. The resulting photos provide the first solid evidence demonstrating that its geographic range extends further than previously thought.

"It was a challenge to confirm our finding as there are so few pictures of this monkey available for study," said Loken. "The only description of Miller's Grizzled Langur came from museum specimens. Our photographs from Wehea are some of the only pictures that we have of this monkey."

"East Kalimantan can be a challenging place to conduct research, given the remoteness of many remaining forested areas, so it isn't surprising that so little is known about this primate," said Dr. Stephanie Spehar, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. "We are very grateful to our local partners. This discovery represents the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of Western and Indonesian scientists, students, NGOs, as well as local communities and government."

"While our finding confirms the monkey still exists in East Kalimantan, there is a good chance that it remains one of the world's most endangered primates," concluded Loken. "I believe it is a race against time to protect many species in Borneo. It is difficult to adopt conservation strategies to protect species when we don't even know the extent of where they live. We need more scientists in the field working on understudied species such as Miller's Grizzled Langur, clouded leopards and sun bears."

African leader's son fights to keep U.S. assets (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The son of the leader of Equatorial Guinea asked a court to dismiss attempts by the Obama administration to seize some $71 million worth of his assets, denying charges that they were obtained with allegedly corrupt funds taken from his country.

Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the son of longtime President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mbasogo, argued he had not violated U.S. or Equatorial Guinea law and called the corruption allegations "character assassination" against him and his country.

U.S. authorities in October filed to seize a $30 million Malibu, California, oceanfront home, a $38.5 million Gulfstream jet, a Ferrari worth more than $500,000 and dozens of pieces of pop singer Michael Jackson memorabilia worth almost $2 million.

They argued that Obiang obtained the items with money corruptly taken from the impoverished African nation through a variety of alleged schemes, including requiring companies to pay so-called taxes and fees to him as well as to make donations to his pet projects and then took those funds for his own use.

Obiang serves as minister of forestry and agriculture, a job that pays him almost $82,000 a year, under his father who has ruled for more than 30 years. Billions of dollars in revenue come into the country from its large oil, timber and natural gas resources.

"This forfeiture action is not only misplaced, but fatally flawed," Obiang's lawyers wrote in a motion filed late on Friday that requested a U.S. judge in California to dismiss the forfeiture attempt.

They said that Obiang was granted a 20-year concession to harvest timber in the country in the mid-1990s and that made him a "very wealthy man" by 2005 when he bought most of the assets.

Further, there was insufficient detail to prove that the assets were paid for with so-called fees and taxes allegedly collected for personal gain, the filing said.

"There is thus no basis to establish, much less by a heightened showing, that Minister Nguema's assets can be traced to illegally gotten gains sufficient to justify civil forfeiture," Obiang's lawyers wrote.

Obiang's lawyers also included an April 2005 letter from the U.S. Justice Department that said at the time they had no reason to block, seize or forfeit assets he planned to use to buy a Gulfstream jet and that there was no evidence that the funds to be used would violate U.S. money-laundering laws.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment because the litigation is pending. U.S. authorities have taken custody of the memorabilia, the Malibu house and the Ferrari, but so far they have not yet been able to get custody of the plane.

Obiang's lawyers asked for a hearing to be held as early as February 27 on their motion to dismiss the forfeiture complaint.

UK's Cameron says bank bonuses "out of control" (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Bonuses in Britain's financial services sector have been "out of control" in recent years, Prime Minister David Cameron said on Thursday, unveiling plans to cap cash rewards again at state-backed banks.

Cameron said his coalition government would next week set out detailed proposals on curbing executive pay across all sectors, a sensitive issue in Britain where unemployment is increasing and pay rises for most people are lagging inflation.

With 2011 bonus payouts only weeks away for Europe's banks there is particular scrutiny in Britain on lenders bailed out by UK taxpayers during the financial crisis. A tough year for investment banking income and poor share price performance have added to pressure to rein in bonuses.

Cash bonuses at Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS.L) and Lloyds Banking Group (LLOY.L) would be limited to 2,000 pounds ($3,100), Cameron said.

The state has an 83 percent stake in RBS and also owns 40 percent of Lloyds after taxpayers bailed them out.

The cash bonus cap was used last year, although some staff were able to convert some of the shares they were given into cash as early as June.

Payouts being lined up for top executives, like RBS Chief Executive Stephen Hester, are also coming under fire, although RBS denied reports it had decided to award him a bonus of between 1.3 million pounds and 1.5 million pounds. Cameron said Hester's bonus had not yet been decided.

A WORLD AWAY

Bonus pots for 2011 are likely to be slashed after a year of paltry revenues across investment banks, although bankers' payouts will still be high compared with what many people earn. Even U.S. powerhouse Goldman Sachs (GS.N) cut its pay bill for 2011 by 21 percent from a year earlier, to $12.2 billion.

The payout pool at RBS is likely to be roughly half of what it was for 2010, coming in at between 400 million and 500 million pounds.

RBS has recently taken the axe to big chunks of its investment bank, cutting 3,500 jobs and saying it will exit some markets. Its troubles are likely to increase taxpayers' irritation over large bonuses.

Cameron, a centre-right Conservative, has been a staunch defender of Britain's financial services industry, which still contributes more than 10 percent of GDP.

He refused to sign a European Union treaty last month because he feared it could damage the industry, a mainstay of the London economy.

However, the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition government has also been aware of public concern over what Britons regard as excessive rewards for bankers, who helped cause a financial crisis that is driving down living standards for the majority.

"There should be a proper, functioning market for talent at the top of business. And that will inevitably mean some people will earn great rewards," Cameron said in a speech.

"But that is a world away from what we've seen in recent years where the bonus culture, particularly in the City (of London), has got out of control.

Cameron wants to curb executive pay across companies by giving shareholders a power of veto on remuneration packages.

The plan, to be detailed next week, has drawn mixed responses from investors. One poll by Reuters showed a majority of respondents panning the proposals, saying they would not work or could backfire, straining relationships between investors and company boards.

Others have welcomed the move.

"A step-change is needed to address the minority of excesses which are now damaging the reputation of the majority of well-managed companies," said Dominic Rossi, Chief Investment Officer for equities at Fidelity Worldwide Investment, adding that "the status quo is no longer an option."

(AP) ? A maintenance man quietly detailed in court how he lured a 7-year-old girl into a vacant apartment, molested her, beat and stabbed her to death and stuffed her body into a trash bin. The admission Tuesday as the girl's family sobbed in the front row brought an unusually rapid conclusion to a murder case that frightened a north Georgia community just over a month ago.

Jorelys Rivera (JOR'-ih-lees ruh-VEHR'-uh) disappeared when she left the complex's playground to head to her apartment to get sodas for her friends. Speaking softly and with little emotion, 20-year-old Ryan Brunn told a judge he used her lost roller skate to coax her into the unit in the complex where he had worked for about a month and forced her to undress in a bathtub.

"I didn't want her to go home and tell her mom or dad on me," Brunn said. "So I cut her."

A judge swiftly sentenced him to life in prison without parole after making him tell the packed courtroom what happened.

"I would like to apologize for everything I've done," Brunn said, turning to the girl's family. "Lo siento," he said, which means "I'm sorry" in Spanish.

Prosecutors read a statement from the girl's mother, Joselinne Rivera, who said she hopes he suffers as much as her family has.

"The rest of my life I am going to feel terrible and destroyed because of the harm you did to my daughter," Rivera said in the statement. "I desire this man the worst possible of the world, and that they do to him the worst so he suffers."

She and the family didn't comment after the hearing.

The guilty plea to murder, child molestation and other charges spares Brunn from possibly facing the death penalty ? and Rivera's family from the prospect of an emotionally devastating trial. Law enforcement officers said the speed of the case even caught them by surprise.

"It's not often that we get to see a monster appear in court and make a full admission. And certainly we don't get to see justice done this fast," said Vernon Keenan, the head of Georgia's Bureau of Investigation. He said Brunn showed at the hearing that he was a "sociopathic killer."

"He has no remorse. And he deserves no sympathy," said Keenan. "He is a cold and calculated killer."

Page Pate, an Atlanta defense attorney who has worked on murder cases, said he was surprised by the speed of the conclusion. Brunn was indicted on the charges just a week ago. He pointed to two possible reasons that led to Brunn's decision.

"The lawyers representing him realized early on they had an uphill battle and I expect they were looking for the fastest resolution possible. Their number one objective was to save him from the death penalty," said Pate. "And the district attorney's office realized this would be a very costly trial."

Brunn said he chose Rivera after he found her skate outside her apartment building in Canton. He snapped a photo of it and then used it on Dec. 2 to persuade the girl to follow him into a vacant unit he had earlier unlocked.

"I thought to myself, I was going to lure her. I don't know why," he said, adding: "I asked her if it was hers. And she came."

When they got to the apartment, he first forced her to lie on a mattress and undress, he said. When she wanted to use the bathroom, he said he followed her in there and forced her to lie on a bathtub. He said she never asked to leave, but only if she could go home when he was finished. He said he soon grew fearful of the consequences of the assault.

"I got scared in there from what I was doing and I didn't want her to go home and tell on me," he said.

So he bound her arms with plastic ties, stuffed her mouth with a cloth dishrag and then wrapped her face in tape, Brunn said. He said he then took a razor used for slicing carpet and slit her throat. When she struggled for a few minutes, he said he hit her about five times with the skate and then stuffed her body in a garbage bag, which he then dumped in a trash compactor.

That night, he said, he helped search for the missing girl for about an hour, went to Wal-Mart with two friends and came home to smoke marijuana and meth. Two days later, though, he said he began "freaking out" as the search for the girl intensified.

He said he took a McDonald's receipt from his car and scrawled a note saying the girl's body was in the trash compactor, which he taped to the device. When pressed by the judge why he did that, he responded simply: "I was high."

Brunn insisted he never had sex with the girl, and prosecutors agreed to reduce charges against him from aggravated child molestation to child molestation. He also pleaded guilty to a range of other charges, including assault and abandonment of a dead body. He had no history of a criminal past and passed a background check to work at the complex.

Keenan, the GBI director, said after the hearing that investigators uncovered evidence that Brunn had molested other children. He said Brunn's speedy guilty plea gives investigators a chance to delve into Brunn's pathos to uncover what makes him tick.

"If he were on death row, we wouldn't have the opportunity to talk to him and learn and perfect our skills," he said.

Brunn, who is being transferred to state prison, said nothing else as he was escorted from courtroom but his attorney offered brief remarks.

"A child's life was lost and he was sentenced," said his attorney, David Cannon. "And that's the bottom line ladies and gentlemen. It's over."

Hockney close to home with Yorkshire landscape show (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A major new show of British artist David Hockney's recent landscapes is a homecoming of sorts, rooting the 74-year-old in his native Yorkshire and far from the swimming pools of Los Angeles for which he is most famous.

"David Hockney: A Bigger Picture" features more than 150 landscapes, many of which are vast in scale and vibrant in color. Most date from the last eight years barring a few earlier landscapes going back as far as 1956.

"Winter Timber", for example, is a 2009 work over six meters (yards) long and, like all of his larger paintings, made up of several smaller panels.

The stump of a dead tree is deep purple, the felled logs next to it orange and yellow, the grass a vivid green and the avenue of tress receding into the distance bright blue.

Curators of the blockbuster show, which runs from January 21-April 9, said the picture showed how Hockney tended to give himself freer rein when painting from memory, as he did here, than directly from observation.

Asked why he had decided to return home and devote so much time to landscape paintings of Yorkshire in northern England, he replied: "I knew the landscape was rather subtle and lovely there ... If you're my age and you find an exciting subject, you stick with it."

He told Channel 4 News in an interview that his three decades in California, where he made his trademark swimming pool series, had affected the way he saw his homeland.

"It does make you see ... England a bit differently," he said. "That's partly what it's about. Simply the changes in the seasons, because you'd been in California, they became a bigger event here for me than for somebody who's here all the time."

The opening room of the 13-gallery exhibition contains four large paintings of the same trees, each depicting a different season, a theme that runs throughout the show.

The idea is developed on film in one work that features 18 screens displayed as one large grid, each section slightly out of synch with the next and capturing the same scene but at different times.

In the room "Sketchbooks and iPads", his traditional sketchbooks are displayed next to a series of works on iPad, which Hockney uses increasingly as a drawing tool.

"At first you think it's a bit of a novelty," he said of using the iPad for his art. "It took me a while to realize it's quite a serious tool. I've no doubt it's a marvelous new tool."

But it is not simply out with the old, in with the new for Hockney.

The influence of past masters like Vincent Van Gogh are clear to see in some works, and he dedicates an entire room to 17th century French artist Claude Lorrain's "The Sermon on the Mount" which he saw in New York in 2009.

He was so fascinated by its spatial effects that he made his own, monumental version, which again injects bright colors to the biblical scene.

The run-up to the exhibition was briefly overshadowed by remarks Hockney made that were portrayed as a swipe at fellow British artist Damien Hirst for not painting his own canvases.

Hirst's spot paintings are currently the focus of a series of shows at Larry Gagosian's galleries around the world.

The artist painted only a handful of the 1,400 or so works himself, leaving assistants to execute the rest, yet Hirst has no hesitation in calling them his own.

Subsequently the Royal Academy issued a statement saying Hockney's remarks had been taken out of context.

"The Royal Academy wishes to make it clear that ... David Hockney has not made any comments which imply criticism of another artist's working practices nor are there any words to this effect on the poster promoting his forthcoming exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts."

Reviews of Hockney's show have been mixed.

Adrian Hamilton of the Independent called it an "absolutely stunning exhibition", while Adrian Searle wrote in the Guardian:

"It is clear Hockney is excited by these variations and difficulties. But all those splodges and patterns, smears and dapples and churnings get very wearying. I just can't wait to get indoors and kick the gumboots off."

Don't Tell Baby's Sex to Prevent 'Sex Selection' Abortions, Doctor Says (LiveScience.com)

Doctors should not tell pregnant women the sex of their baby until 30 weeks into a pregnancy, one physician is arguing, taking a stance that is sure to be controversial.

By not revealing a fetus' sex, doctors could prevent abortions related to the sex of the baby, according to Dr. Rajendra Kale, interim editor-in-chief of the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The practice of "sex selection," or the aborting of female fetuses because of a preference for sons, is an issue in several Asian countries, and may also be done by some immigrants in Canada and the United States, Kale said.

"A pregnant woman being told the sex of the fetus at ultrasonography at a time when an unquestioned abortion is possible is the starting point" of sex selection, Kale wrote in the editorial published online today (Jan. 16) in CMAJ.

Currently, most pregnant women in the United States get an ultrasound between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy that looks for fetal anomalies, and learn the sex of their baby at that time.

Kale pointed to research in Canada and the United States indicating that immigrants in certain ethnic groups, including people from China, Korea and India, selectively abort female fetuses: couples who have two daughters are more likely to have a son as their third child than would be excepted if left to chance.

Ethical concerns

Two large organizations of doctors ? the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada, and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists ? agree that sex selection is unethical.

Still, withholding information about the sex of a fetus from a woman is also not ethical, according to the ACOG. "Because a patient is entitled to obtain personal medical information, including information about the sex of her fetus, it will sometimes be impossible for health care professionals to avoid unwitting participation in sex selection," according to a 2007 ACOG committee report.

But Kale argued that although a woman has a right to information about herself as it relates to her health and medical care, the sex of the fetus is medically irrelevant information, and does not affect the care of the pregnant woman or her unborn child. The only exception should be in cases of rare, sex-linked illnesses, Kale said.

What could be done

While the problem of sex selection in Canada and the United States is likely small, it should not be ignored, according to Kale, a native of Mumbai, India.

The organizations that govern physicians in Canada should adopt policies that limit disclosure of fetal sex by health professionals to after 30 weeks, Kale said.

Pass it on: To prevent sex selection, doctors should not disclose the sex of the baby until after the mother is 30 weeks pregnant.

Assessing blocks of beachfront in Malibu

The California Coastal Commission was on a mission to find out what's keeping the public from some of the state's most desirable beaches.

On a rare bus tour of the Malibu coast this month, officials stopped to inspect gates that were once locked, peered at fake "no parking" signs residents used to ward off beachgoers and even stumbled upon a movie shoot hogging all the parking at the glitzy beach town's pier.

But perhaps most noteworthy was what the commissioners didn't see: more than 20 pathways to the beach that were set aside on paper ? some of them decades ago ? but have yet to be built, depriving people of the opportunity to get to the shore.

Los Angeles County lags behind every county in Southern California when it comes to opening public paths to the sea, according to a new report by the Coastal Commission, the 12-member panel charged with policing development and ensuring public access along the state's 1,100-mile shoreline.

Since the 1970s, the agency has ordered that corridors of land for 34 walkways, stairways and viewing areas be designated for the public to reach the county's shoreline. The orders came through agreements with coastal property owners as a condition of building along the beach.

But decades later, only 13 have been built and opened.

"We know our work is cut out for us because over half the sites in the most populous county are not open," said Linda Locklin, manager of the agency's coastal access program. "That's not good enough."

The report showed that 60% of the 111 strips of land the commission has required landowners to offer for public access from San Diego to San Luis Obispo counties have been built and opened, compared with 38% in L.A. County. San Diego and Orange counties scored the best, with 85% and 73% of their agreed-upon pathways completed.

All of the unopened pathways in Los Angeles County are in Malibu, a wealthy enclave whose mansion-lined beaches and secluded coves have long been California's most contentious access battlegrounds.

On the four-hour field trip Thursday, the bus wound its way from the wide open sands of Santa Monica State Beach up Malibu's Pacific Coast Highway, where the sand and surf beckon from behind a wall of development and, often, the only blue-water views are the narrow spaces between the multimillion-dollar homes.

Stops on the excursion included sections with insufficient access, like a would-be pathway to Carbon Beach that is blocked by a massive generator, a 9-foot-high wall and a tennis court next to a bright white mansion. Staffers, acting as tour guides, pointed out Dan Blocker County Beach, a mile of sand that in 1979 was donated for public use in memory of the "Bonanza" actor but remains partly fenced off and difficult to reach.

At Broad Beach, a fast-eroding ribbon of sand that's home to the rich and famous, the commissioners got out of the bus and crowded onto a concrete stairway built over a rock-and-sandbag sea wall protecting a long line of pricey homes from the crashing waves.

The patchwork of public and private sand has made the beach a hot spot for conflict between wealthy residents and visitors. In the past, homeowners have posted misleading "private beach" signs and hired security guards on ATVs to shoo visitors off the sand.

After years of clashes, "the private guards are mostly gone," Coastal Commission district manager Steve Hudson told the group.

"Mostly gone?" one official asked.

Some guards remain, Hudson explained, but they no longer ride ATVs or tell visitors it's a private beach.

State coastal officials say they lack the funds and staff to open and maintain public access paths and must attempt to forge partnerships with local agencies to construct and operate the walkways before the agreements expire.

The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, which manages five beach paths in the area and is building a sixth, said it would work with the state "to open these accessways which are not anywhere near fully accessible at this point."

The pathways required by the Coastal Commission are a small portion of the more than 850 access points run by local and state agencies, nonprofits and some private landowners up and down the coast, but they are often some of the most hard-won.

There are legal roadblocks too.

In Malibu, efforts to build public walkways to prized beaches are reliably met with landowner lawsuits, which can delay action for years.

Such holdups struck Coastal Commissioner Dayna Bochco as most frustrating.

"Through litigation you can give yourselves 10 to 15 years and keep the public away?" she said. "It just seems wrong."

Ten dead in militant attack in Iraq's Ramadi (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Ten people were killed when gunmen wearing explosive belts stormed a police building in the Iraqi city of Ramadi on Sunday, police and provincial officials said.

The attack in mainly Sunni Anbar province followed several weeks of bombings targeting Shi'ites after the eruption of a political crisis that has threatened to break up the coalition government and raised fears of renewed sectarian violence.

The assault in Ramadi, a onetime al Qaeda hotspot where militants frequently attack government facilities, provided a new test for Iraqi security forces without the support of U.S. troops, the last of which pulled out in mid-December, nearly nine years after the invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Six gunmen, three policemen and a civilian died in the assault on the Ramadi police building, which houses an anti-terrorism unit and a jail, and 18 other people were wounded, police and hospital sources said.

One of the attackers detonated his explosive belt at the entrance to the police building and others tried unsuccessfully to take hostages but were turned away by intense gunfire from security forces inside, police and provincial officials said.

Three of the gunmen were killed by police gunfire and three blew themselves up, the last after he was cornered by security forces on a rooftop, the officials said.

Ramadi, the Anbar provincial capital, witnessed some of the worst violence during the height of the war that followed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion. It was the heart of a Sunni Islamist insurgency tied to al Qaeda.

Anbar tribal leaders and thousands of Sunni insurgents eventually turned against al Qaeda and formed the Sahwa militia, which joined U.S. forces and helped turn the tide of the war.

Iraqi security officials have expressed concern that al Qaeda may regroup in Anbar following the U.S. withdrawal.

Anbar has had testy relations with the central government recently, particularly following an arrest campaign against former members of Saddam's banned Baath party. Local officials have suggested Anbar might join other Sunni-majority provinces in seeking more autonomy.

Violence in Iraq has ebbed since the height of sectarian slaughter in 2006-2007 but Sunni insurgents and rival Shi'ite militias still carry out attacks almost daily. Insurgents often target local government buildings and security forces.

The attack in Ramadi came a day after a suicide bomber killed more than 50 people and wounded more than 100 in an attack on Shi'ite pilgrims passing through a police checkpoint in the southern city of Basra.

Tensions are running high in Iraq, four weeks after the last U.S. troops pulled out, following moves by the Shi'ite-led government against two Sunni political leaders and a series of bombings that have killed scores of Shi'ites.

HBO says no political agenda behind Palin film (AP)

PASADENA, Calif. ? In a politically polarized country, the people behind HBO's upcoming movie on Sarah Palin's vice presidential campaign are being careful not to take one side or the other.

"There is no agenda here," Danny Strong, writer of the film "Game Change," said at a news conference Friday. Filmmakers said they sought historical accuracy.

The movie debuts March 10. It is based on John Heilemann and Mark Halperin's book about the 2008 presidential campaign, but focuses specifically on Palin. Director Jay Roach said he wrote a long letter to the former Alaska governor seeking an interview with her to help the film, "but I got a very quick email back from her attorney saying, `I checked, she declined.'"

Roach and Strong were the team behind HBO's Emmy-winning "Recount" about the disputed 2000 presidential election.

"I don't think this movie is going to change people's minds one way or another," Strong said. "People are very polarized. It's not designed to change people's minds."

Actress Julianne Moore looks strikingly like Palin in her depiction. Asked what she thought of Palin after getting so close to the story, Moore said she had "profound respect" for the historical nature of the candidacy.

"There was a tremendous amount of pressure," Moore said. "That was what I was trying to capture, the pressure that she was under."

Actor Ed Harris portrays John McCain. Although the resemblance to his character isn't quite as sharp as Moore's, it's pretty close.

One unusual casting was Woody Harrelson, who plays McCain campaign strategist Steve Schmidt. The film's story is largely seen through Schmidt's eyes. Harrelson, who describes himself politically as "probably more an anarchist," said he met Schmidt and liked him.

"The concept of playing this guy who I think ideologically couldn't be any farther away from me felt like a real challenge," he said.

Police: 3 killed at NC lumber company; gunman hurt

(AP) ? A disgruntled employee opened fire at a lumber company early Friday, killing three people and injuring another person before he went home and turned the gun on himself, leaving him wounded, authorities said.

The person injured at the McBride Lumber Co. in central North Carolina was flown to a hospital, Sheriff Dempsey Owens said. The gunman was also taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The shooter left a note, but police would not reveal what it said. Authorities also haven't released the names of the shooting victims or gunman.

Owens said witnesses reported the gunman was a disgruntled employee, though it wasn't clear what he was upset over.

The company's founder, Dorothy McBride, said she was shocked.

"Oh, my God, I can't believe it," said McBride, who was not at the business at the time of the shootings. "I just can't talk about it right now. I have to find out more."

A family-owned business, the company makes pallets and treated wood for furniture and other products.

A person who answered the phone at the business said they had no comment.

(AP) ? The top U.S. health official administered polio vaccination drops to children in New Delhi on Friday as India marked one year since its last case of the crippling disease.

The milestone is a major victory in the global effort to eradicate polio. If no previously undisclosed cases are uncovered in the coming weeks, India will be removed the list of endemic countries, leaving only Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius marked the day by administering the oral polio vaccine to a group of children at a maternal health clinic in New Delhi.

India's success in fighting polio has been credited to a partnership between the government, the World Health Organization, UNICEF and Rotary International, whose members have contributed more than $1 billion to the global eradication effort.

The achievement gives a boost to those who had begun to lose hope of ever defeating the stubborn disease.

"Marching ahead, the goal now is to sustain this momentum," said Deepak Kapur, head of Rotary's polio eradication program in India.

I have tried to uncheck the mute box, but it is darkened"?MacInTouch?5:13 PM
