NASA sees Hurricane Isaac make double landfall in Louisiana

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Hurricane Isaac is continuing to drop heavy rainfall over Louisiana and Mississippi, and NASA's TRMM satellite identified that rainfall as the storm was making landfall.

On Aug. 29, 2012 at 1 p.m. EDT, Isaac was still a hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 75 mph (120 kmh). Isaac was located about 10 miles northwest (15 km) of Houma, Louisiana and moving slowly. It is moving to the northwest near 6 mph (9 km). Isaac continued bringing heavy rainfall to southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The threat for dangerous coastal storm surge and inland flooding are expected to continue overnight.

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite flew over Hurricane Isaac twice on the night that Isaac made landfall in Louisiana and headed for New Orleans. TRMM is a joint mission managed by both NASA and JAXA, the Japanese Space Agency.

In the first of the two overflights, the TRMM radar saw two hot towers in the eyewall of Hurricane Isaac just hours before landfall. While hot towers were shooting up in the eyewall over the ocean, Isaac's inner rainband was already lashing Louisiana with heavy rain. Hot towers are common in intensifying tropical cyclones are are a sign that energy is being pumped into the hurricane from the ocean's surface. A "hot tower" is a tall cumulonimbus cloud that reaches at least to the top of the troposphere, the lowest layer of the atmosphere. It extends approximately nine miles (14.5 km) high in the tropics.

Two images were created by Owen Kelley, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. The background of the first image showed TRMM infrared observations that give a sense of the height of the cloud cover the hides the heavy precipitation inside of of the hurricane. The blue-gray 3D volume contains the light precipitation inside the hurricane, using a 20 dBZ radar-reflectivity threshold.

In the image, an insert reveals details at the center of the hurricane. Two hot towers are indicated by the yellow and orange colors. They are locations where strong updrafts are lifting frozen precipitation above a 14.5 km (9.1 mile) threshold. Water that condenses in updrafts will soon freeze if updrafts lift it above the zero-degree isotherm near 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) altitude. The freezing releases another boost of latent heat, the fuel of hurricanes, following the initial release of latent heat when the water vapor condenses into liquid.

The TRMM radar happened to overfly Hurricane Isaac again just five hours later, shortly after the eyewall made landfall. Robbed of its oceanic source of energy, the eyewall hot towers are gone in this later overflight. Instead of reaching 14.5 km (9.1 mile) altitude, the eyewall merely reaches a 10 km (6.2 mile) altitude, which is indicated by the light green shading at the top of the blue-green volume of light precipitation.

Unfortunately for New Orleans and surrounding areas, TRMM sees that Hurricane Isaac's eyewall was remarkably well organized at that time, despite having made landfall. The insert shows a ring of very intense radar echos in red, echos that exceed 40 dBZ radar reflectivity. The northwest quadrant of his ring of heavy precipitation is almost on top of New Orleans at the time of observation.

AMC Theatres releasing horror film "Smiley"

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - AMC Theatres will release the horror film "Smiley" through a partnership with Fever Productions, the theater chain said Monday.

The film will debut on October 12, through AMC's independent platform on 28 screens in 14 mostly urban markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston and Atlanta. AMC will also spearhead the marketing campaign.

"Smiley" is written and directed by Michael Gallagher, creator of the YouTube channel Totally Sketch. The film was co-written by Glasgow Phillips ("South Park"), and produced by Michael Wormser ("Some Guy Who Kills People") of Level 10 Films. "Totally Sketch" and its comic shorts command an audience of over 11 million subscribers.

"Smiley," with its ample blood and gore, represents a change of pace for the new media impresario. It centers on an insane college student named Ashley (Caitlin Gerard of "Magic Mike") who summons a mysterious serial killer named "Smiley" through the internet.

The deal was brokered by Michael Gallagher and Michael Wormser for Fever Productions and Nikkole Denson-Randolph, Vice President of Alternative and Special Content at AMC.

In addition to the AMC release, the film will be available on more traditional platforms including DVD, Blu-ray, iTunes, Redbox and cable VOD after the traditional theatrical release window has closed.

Apple iPhone 5, iPad Mini Release Date Rumors: Will They Share The Same Stage?

Apple is widely expected to unveil its next generation iPhone, unofficially dubbed the "iPhone 5," at a special event Wednesday, Sept. 12, along with the long-rumored "iPad mini." It all started with a recent report by Rene Ritchie of iMore, who first revealed the expected release dates, followed by a number of news outlets confirming the same.

Ritchie?reported, citing "sources who have proven accurate in the past," that Apple would introduce "the new iPhone at a special event on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, with the release date to follow 9 days later on Friday, September 21."

He continued:

"The iPad mini will be announced at the same September 12 event, as will the new iPod nano. We haven't heard a release date for the iPad mini yet, but it could be the same as the iPhone 5. It seems likely the new iPod touch will make an appearance on September 12 as well, though we haven't heard any specific information about that yet either."

On Thursday, another reliable source,?John Gruber of Daring Fireball, challenged Ritchie's report of iPhone 5 and iPad mini sharing the same stage at the next month's event. He said that the iPhone being "the most important single product in Apple's lineup," the upcoming iteration of the device is not likely to share the spotlight with another new product from the Cupertino tech giant. He opined that there could be two separate events.

Follow us

"I don't think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber said. "Why share the spotlight? Why have another Apple product battling with the iPhone for the top spots in news coverage? So I thought, well, maybe they'd only seed the review units of the iPhone on September 12, with the new-size iPad going into reviewer hands a few weeks later."

According to Gruber, it would make more sense if Apple calls shareholders and spectators to an event that is solely focused on iPhone 5 and iOS 6. Once the new iPhone is shipped nine days later (Friday, Sept. 21), "another wave of iPhone-focused attention" would grab the attention as the early reviews of the handset would start coming in.

Then, a few days later, it would be time for Apple to announce the iPad mini at its traditional "music event" in the first or second week of October, an event in which the company has been releasing new iPods for the last decade.

The Loop's well-connected Jim Dalrymple, well-known for his "yep" responses to Apple-related rumors, seemed to agree with what Gruber says about Apple's plans. On Gruber's take on the impending Apple release dates, Dalrymple simply commented - "Oh that Gruber is a smart fellow."

Considering Dalrymple's track record regarding Apple-oriented gossips, his somewhat positive response does add weight to Gruber's calculated speculation.

Although Dalrymple responded "Yep" regarding Ritchie's report on the Sept. 12 Apple event too, he, as Gruber pointed out, apparently agreed to what was related to the new iPhone, but not the iPad mini.

"Careful readers may notice that in?Jim Dalrymple's "Yep" regarding Ritchie's scoop?on the September 12 event date, the blockquoted text only includes the portion regarding the iPhone," Gruber said.

When it comes to features, the new iPhone is highly expected to have a much-improved processor, a larger 4-inch display with 640 x 1136 resolutions and iOS 6. Other likely features include a 4G LTE technology, Near Field Communication (NFC), 1GB RAM, iOS 6, improved Siri, liquidmetal casing, an 8 megapixel (or even higher) rear camera, a 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video chatting and a much-improved battery life.

In terms of the iPad mini, it's rumored to sport a 7.85-inch 1024x768 display with 163 ppi. The pricing of the device is expected to be between $249 and $299.

Jefferson Regional ready to expand; community embraces Highmark union

Marvin Levin, like much of Allegheny County, learned that Jefferson Regional Medical Center was affiliating with insurer Highmark when he read about it in the newspaper.

But as president of the Jefferson Regional Community Health Council, Mr. Levin had a keener interest than most. The council, a group of 19 South Hills residents, is both supporter and monitor of all health care matters in their community, and Jefferson Regional is the leading hospital in their coverage area.

It was council members, he said, who pushed to get a traffic light installed at the busy Clairton Boulevard intersection so people could more safely get to the hospital. And when someone mentioned they'd had an exceptionally long wait in Jefferson's emergency room one time, the council went directly to hospital officials to voice their concern.

Long waits in the Jefferson Regional emergency room should not be an issue at future council meetings.

Pending approval from the state attorney general and Allegheny County Orphans' Court, Highmark has committed $75 million to the Jefferson Regional Medical Center Foundation, with plans to expand the emergency department, add clinical services such as neurosurgery, as well as fund expansion at the Bethel Park campus.

So, after emceeing Jefferson Regional's annual community recognition dinner Wednesday, Mr. Levin of Castle Shannon said he's hearing nothing but favorable comments from fellow South Hills residents about the Highmark-Jefferson affiliation, which will turn control of the hospital board to Highmark but infuse the Jefferson Hills hospital with the money to expand and improve.

"They will have the influx of money to do what they want to do," he said.

Jefferson may be turning over board control to Highmark, but Mr. Levin and others see the transaction as way for their community hospital to keep its identity. "I think what we've done is preserve health care for all of us in this room and the people in this community," Jefferson Regional president and CEO John Dempster told the audience Wednesday night.

Switched On: The watch and the workhorse

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On the watch and the workhorse

In mature, competitive markets flooded with products, many brands come and go. Last week, though, two companies came to New York City to celebrate milestone anniversaries of their electronic products. Lenovo celebrated the 20th anniversary of the ThinkPad as Casio marked the 30th anniversary of the G-Shock watch. The notebook PC remains among the most versatile and complex devices consumers use today while the watch is one of the simplest. Yet some commonality between these two products may include lessons for other technology products that wish to remain around for decades.

McLaren Automotive Plans New Concept Release at Monterey Car ...

Car News, McLaren, Monterey Car Week 2012 ? By MR on August 17, 2012 at 10:21 am ? No Comments

McLaren MP4-12C Spider in Action

McLaren Automotive is planning a surprise concept release at the 2012 Monterey Car Week today, according to insider information we received last night. What exactly McLaren will showcase was still rather unknown until we received an unconfirmed update from a member of our Facebook page. It seems that the MSO department of McLaren is highly involved in the release, but McLaren has not confirmed this statement yet. You can read more about it below!

The official public debut of the 2013 McLaren MP4-12C Spider is part of the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance 2012 this weekend. Same goes for the McLaren 12C CAN-AM Edition Racing Concept, which is an one-off design study finished in historic McLaren Orange and satin black. Additionally a rare McLaren F1 GTR Longtail goes up for auction at one of the auctions in Monterey.

McLaren mentioned on Facebook it will have a McLaren on the Pebble Beach Concept Lawn. This could hint at an early sneak preview of the upcoming McLaren P12 supercar as part of the surprise planned for today. It would also confirm earlier rumors and reports that the P12 gets a private viewing for interested US customers this weekend ahead of its official worldwide release at the 2012 Paris Motor Show next month.

Update: A Facebook member shared more insight into today?s Quail Motorsports Gathering on our Facebook page. He said they will show a McLaren MP4-12C Spider done by the McLaren Special Operations group and one other MP4-12C with total custom bodywork done for a certain special customer. This could be the surprise concept we have been hearing about!

This unique car is in no way representative of McLaren?s new supercar, according to the Facebook member. It is a one-off 12C built to suit the tastes and desires of one particular customer. Unlike the MP4-12C HS ? of which 10 have now been built - this car will remain unique. The project behind the car is very similar in concept to what Jim Glickenhaus had Pininfarina do with the Enzo, transforming it into the P4/5.

All the information from the Facebook member is still unconfirmed at this stage. We only know that McLaren will showcase a surprise on the Pebble Beach Concept Lawn over the coming hours. So stay tuned for more!

CDC to baby boomers: Get tested for hepatitis C - NewsOn6.com ...

By By MIKE STOBBE
AP Medical Writer

ATLANTA (AP) - All baby boomers should get a one-time blood test to learn if they have the liver-destroying hepatitis C virus, U.S. health officials said Thursday.

It can take decades for the blood-borne virus to cause liver damage and symptoms to emerge, so many people don't know they're harboring it. Baby boomers account for about two-thirds of the estimated 3.2 million infected Americans.

More than 15,000 Americans die each year from hepatitis C-related illnesses and the number has been growing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Unless we take action, we project deaths will increase substantially," said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, in a call with reporters.

Hepatitis C virus is most commonly spread today through sharing needles to inject drugs. Before widespread screening of blood donations began in 1992, it was also spread through blood transfusions.

The virus can gradually scar the liver and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer, and is the leading cause of liver transplant. It can trigger damage in other parts of the body, as well.

It's possible some people were infected in ways other than dirty needles or long-ago blood transfusions. Some experts say tattoos, piercings, shared razor blades and toothbrushes, manicures and sniffed cocaine may have caused the virus to spread in some cases.

However it happened, health officials say baby boomers are five times more likely to be infected than other adults.

Officials said they decided to issue the recommendations after seeing the number of Americans dying from hepatitis C-related diseases nearly double from 1999 to 2007.

Another reason: Two drugs hit the market last year that promise to cure many more people than was previously possible.

Previously, testing was recommended only for people considered at highest risk, like current and former injection drug users.

About 3 percent of baby boomers test positive for the virus, the CDC estimates. Of those, some manage to clear the infection from their bodies without treatment, but still have lingering antibodies that give a positive initial test result. That's why confirmatory tests are needed.

Still, only a quarter of infected people are that lucky. Most have active and dangerous infections, health officials said.

"I have met too many patients who were diagnosed with hepatitis C at the time they developed liver cancer or when they needed a liver transplant," said Dr. Andrew Muir, a Duke University physician who is a leader in an advocacy organization called the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable.

The CDC call for testing is "a bold and important move," Muir said in a statement.

The recommendation applies to people born from 1945 to 1965 who have not already been tested. They should get a blood test at their next visit to the doctor, Frieden said.

The CDC proposed the new guidelines earlier this year and made them final on Thursday.

Penn State foots ex-officials' legal bills, not McQueary's

/

Penn State University assistant football coach Mike McQueary arrives at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., to testify against Jerry Sandusky on June 12

By Tom Winter and Hannah RappleyeNBC News

While Penn State continues to pay the legal expenses of former university officials Gary Shultz and Tim Curley, it is not footing the bills for a key witness against Jerry Sandusky at his child sex abuse trial, Mike McQueary, NBC News has learned.

Schultz, a former senior vice president at Penn State, and Curley, the former athletic coordinator, are accused of lying to a grand jury about what they knew of sex abuse allegations against Sandusky. Their case faced its first test in court on Thursday, when defense lawyers?argued?that the charges should be dismissed.

McQueary, a former Penn State assistant coach, testified before a grand jury and at Sandusky?s trial that he saw Sandusky raping a boy as young as 10 in a locker room shower at Penn State in 2001. McQueary testified that he reported the incident to Joe Paterno, Penn State?s legendary former football coach, and later spoke to Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, a meeting that according to McQueary?s testimony took 15 minutes.?

?In my mind when I did speak with Mr. Schultz he was like a district attorney for the university,? McQueary said in court.

But both men told a grand jury investigating the charges against Sandusky that McQueary described witnessing suspicious activity, not an actual sexual assault. Sandusky was convicted in July of 45 charges of child sex abuse.

Former Penn State athletic director Tim Curley, left, and Gary Schultz, a former senior vice president at the university.

A Penn State spokesman cited university bylaws in explaining why the legal bills of both Curley and Schultz are being covered. ?(Employees)shall be entitled as of right to be indemnified by the University against expenses (including counsel fees) and any liability (including judgments, fines, penalties, excise taxes and amounts paid in settlement),? they read.

But Penn State is not obligated to pay legal fees for McQueary, and has not done so, the spokesman said.?

McQueary has testified that he felt he carried out his obligation to report the crime when he spoke to Paterno, Schultz and Curley shortly after witnessing the 2001 incident.

McQueary and a former university janitor, Ronald Petrosky, were the only two Penn State University employees to testify against Sandusky during the trial.

Meantime, in the first hearing on the case against Curley and Schultz since December, attorneys for the former Penn State University administrators appeared?in court in Harrisburg, Pa., on Thursday to argue legal points, including a motion to dismiss the charges.?

Dauphin County?Judge Todd Hoover did not immediately indicate when he would rule on the motion.

While Curley still collects a salary from Penn State, and Schultz collects retirement money, paid through a state retirement fund, McQueary?s annual ?season-to-season? contract with Penn State for his assistant coaching duties was allowed to expire at the end of June, according to university President Rodney Erickson. He is now unemployed.

Erickson confirmed that McQueary was no longer an employee of Penn State during a press conference on July 12, when former FBI Director Louis Freeh published a report that found Penn State administrators, including Paterno and former university President Graham Spanier, covered up abuse allegations against Sandusky.

"McQueary was under a fixed contract,? Erickson said at the press conference. ?That contract ended on June 30, 2012. So this contract simply ended at that point.?

No university official had commented on McQueary?s employment status since November, when the university announced that he was ?on leave? from the football program.

McQueary?s attorneys have indicated they will file a lawsuit against the University. Penn State declined to comment when asked if the university was in settlement talks with McQueary. A source familiar with the legal maneuverings of Penn State tells NBC News that McQueary was never offered assistance for his own legal expenses at any time since the allegations became public.

When reached for comment, McQueary declined to offer any statements to NBC News. McQueary remains a resident of State College, unpaid, unemployed, and weighing his legal options against a University he grew up next to, played, and coached for.

In court, prosecutor Joseph McGettigan asked McQueary if he wished to make coaching his career.

McQueary responded, ?Yes, I loved it.?

10 Over-Used Restaurant Buzzwords

by Patrick Weidinger

?Jumbo shrimp!? Remember the comedian George Carlin making us laugh at the absurdity of restaurants using the buzzword ?jumbo? in front of shrimp? What made this funny? The realization that we saw this type of thing all the time, right there in front of us, on menus, and thought nothing of it.

I thought of this the other day when I was about to have a nice meal at a restaurant and all across the menu I noticed various ?buzzwords? used to try to entice me to buy the food. You have all seen them. A simple ?hamburger? description isn?t good enough ? though I know very well what a hamburger is and what it will look and probably taste like. No, the simple word ?hamburger? is not sufficient. To lure me in and get me to try THEIR hamburger, they use buzzwords to describe it. Therefore, a simple hamburger becomes a ?hand-selected, free-range, grass-fed, organic, choicest beef hamburger.? Or some such nonsense. I thought to myself ? now here is an idea for a top ten list!

Doing some research, I was quickly overwhelmed with possible top ten choices. Hell, I could rattle off about twenty just from memory. Between eating out and reading many menus, and constant media bombardment, we all know these buzzwords. Their use (and over use) render them mostly meaningless. I mean, can a gigantic chain fast food place with hundreds of thousands of restaurants scattered around the globe really ?hand-select? anything they serve? But there it is, right there on the menu. ?Hand-select salads? or ?select prime beef.? These buzzwords must work, or why would all restaurants continue to use them? So here are ten over-used restaurant buzzwords.

220735010 Dd55A2899A Z

At the dawn of time, before the 1970s, before there was lite beer, there was ? beer. Then a black obelisk of marketing appeared before man, and gave unto the world the word ? ?lite.? Meant to imply ?light? (as in, not heavy), they did not even spell it correctly. But soon the idea of a light (lite) beer caught on, and sold tons of product for Miller Brewing Company. Everyone jumped on board. Not just other beer makers, everything and anything having to do with food, within a few short years, would have the post script ?lite? attached to it. It got so that everything could be ?lite.? A Mad Magazine parody of this summed it up nicely when it depicted a can of ?Chicken Fat Lite.? As I am writing this I am drinking ?low calorie? Gatorade though it could just as easily be called ?Gatorade Lite.? Today, the word ?lite? and all it is meant to convey has taken over. Entire sections of the menu at restaurants are titled ?Lite,? or ?Lite-Faire.? Is the food really ?lite?? Yes? In what sense? Is it lighter? Less heavy? Lower calorie? Lower fat? Healthier or better for you? In fact, the answer could be all of the above, or none of the above. The word ?lite? has simply taken on a mythology of its own. The word is slapped on the product or used as a buzzword to describe a menu item, and we just automatically know what it means. Right? Don?t we?

Homemade-Restaurant-Pic

When you go to a restaurant, seldom if ever is it located inside someone?s home. Yet the menu tells you their mashed potatoes are ?homemade.? Seems odd? Some restaurants, especially those that really are small and family owned and operated (something that is fast disappearing from the landscape of the United States), really do serve you food that is homemade ? homemade as in it comes from a home recipe and is prepared by a family who may actually live at the restaurant (making it their ?home?). But too often you see the word ?homemade? attached to foods in larger or even chain restaurants. There is just no way this food is in any conventional sense of the word, ?homemade.? Perhaps it is ?prepared by hand.? You see that a lot too, but at least that accurately describes the process by which the food you are eating was prepared. Made not by a machine, but by hand. Too often the word ?homemade? is used interchangeably with ?hand-made.?

Generous-Portions-Of

One of my all-time favorites, the word ?generous? is usually added to the word ?portion? ? describing the sheer volume of food that is about to be laid before you to eat. But just what is a ?generous portion? of food? Very subjective wouldn?t you say? It is meant to imply that we (the restaurant) are going to pile it on! Sometimes this is the case and truly American-sized portions of food, so huge no human could eat all of it, arrives on your plate. Sometimes, not so much. The ?generous portion? turns out, upon close examination, to be pretty much the same portion of the food you would get from any similar restaurant. Have you ever seen anyone return a meal for lack of generosity in the portions? Or, can you imagine somewhere, someone wanting to return their meal and saying to the waitress ?I specifically requested the miserly portion.?

Eatsmart

I am old enough to remember when restaurants didn?t care if they served ?healthy? food, nor did they try to convince you the deep-fried greasy thing you were eating was anything other than what it was. People ate eggs and bacon and potatoes for breakfast, and that was that. Life was simple then. You ate food, whatever it was, in whatever portions you wanted. You worked, you smoked cigarettes, and you died. Then along comes the 1980s and all of a sudden, scientists were telling us eggs were bad! Steak was bad! Anything from a pig was really bad! Overnight ?Mr. Steak? turned into ?Finley?s.? ?Kentucky Fried Chicken? morphed into ?KFC.? The words ?steak? and ?fried? went from being simple descriptions of what food was being served, to words that described a perception of an ?unhealthy? eating lifestyle. In other words ? the kiss of death for chains in the 1980s-1990s when all of a sudden, people wanted to eat ?healthy.? Therefore, all manner of new buzzwords had to be invented to tell you the food you were eating off the menu was not going to kill your heart and liver, it was actually good for you! Examples included ?wholesome,? ?fresh,? and ?natural.?

0919Bob%20Final Starseafood

Of all the recent food buzzwords you can find on restaurant menus, the most buzz-worthy has to be ?signature.? This word is meant to imply, to the diner, that what they are selecting off the menu and about to eat and enjoy, was made by someone who put their signature to it. OK, maybe not actually made as in prepared. The cook is not going to sign your food. But someone, somewhere, maybe came up with a new recipe or a new way to prepare the food, and as such, is personally certifying, through his or her signature, that what you are getting is, well, ?signature.? To be honest, I don?t know what this is meant to imply really.

Premiumbeefedited 0

Premium is a buzzword used to describe all manner of things, but at least here in the USA, we associate the word ?premium? mostly with gasoline. ?Premium gas.? It?s the most expensive button on the gas pump, the one we seldom push unless we are driving a car with an engine that requires it. Just what does the word ?premium? describe when I see it on a restaurant menu? Top-of-the-line? OK. The very best? OK. But how do I know what is being served to me is in fact ?premium? beef? What exactly is it that separates this chunk of cow meat from all the others and makes it deserving of the title? There was a time, not long ago, when the government decided, and enforced through regulation and inspection, certain grades of food, especially meat. To call meat ?Grade A? or ?premium? really meant something then. There was a described and quantifiable method to ensure that what you were getting really was ?premium? (as opposed to just, run of the mill and ordinary). But today you see the word ?premium? attached to all manner of food.

Artisanal V2 460X285

The word artisanal literally means ?a worker who practices a trade or handcraft? or ?one who produces something, usually a food, in limited quantities using traditional methods.? Wow. The word brings to mind real artisans: potters, barrel makers, monks cloistered away somewhere making beer, shepherd?s churning butter and making cheese. But today, you open a menu and there you see ?artisanal? cheese, or ?artisanal? beer. Even ?artisanal sausage.? The word ?artisanal? is now somewhat interchangeable with the ?local? or ?slow? food movement. Where food is prepared by hand, in small amounts, using traditional and sustainable methods. See, I used several buzzwords to describe a buzzword. But really that is what we are being sold when we pick up a menu and select an item with the word ?artisanal? on it. An image that in all likelihood, is a phantom. Was the cheese you are eating really made from hand-milked cows, and hand churned? Maybe. Was the ?artisanal sausage? ground up from the meat of a pig fed, well, fed what exactly? Pigs will eat anything. What makes the meat from a pig (sausage) ?artisanal?? Did the sausage come from a pig that was ?free-range?? Pigs are not free range animals. It does get a bit confusing. And I do not mean to make fun of the actual local food movement which I believe is a great thing and a more sustainable lifestyle would do all of us, and this world, a great favor. But really. ?artisanal sausage??

Growing-Tomatoes-300

I live in the tomato capital of the world (how is that for a geographical food description buzzword?). Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and to be specific, the little hamlet of Washington Borough, PA. Some of the very best tomatoes in the world are grown right here. Come visit the annual Washington Borough tomato festival some summer and see for yourself. I would have called it the ?World Famous? Washington Borough tomato festival, but it isn?t. That would be using an inaccurate buzzword to try to get you to come to the festival. I would not do that to Listverse readers.

Now, back on topic. I am no farmer, but having grown up here, I can attest to one undeniable fact about tomatoes. You need the sun to grow them. Yet, for some reason, restaurants everywhere want me to know that the tomatoes they are serving me are ?sun-grown,? or ?sun-ripened.? Well smack me upside the head in the county square! You don?t say? These tomatoes I am eating were ?sun-ripened??! I am impressed. I am even more impressed when I find my tomatoes were ?sun-dried,? or the coffee I am drinking was made with ?sun-roasted? beans, or the lettuce on my salad was ?sun-grown.?

Saveurmanresaspread

One of my personal pet peeve restaurant menu buzzwords. I know what a food award is, or at least is supposed to be. Some products, like certain beer and whisky brands, actually print the awards and medals they have won right on the can or bottle. Pabst Blue Ribbon beer is named after its award for goodness sake. It?s right there, on the can ? a blue ribbon! So when I see ?award-winning salad? on a restaurant menu, I ask ? ?well, where is the award?? ?Is it hanging on the wall somewhere, maybe next to the rest rooms?? ?What was the award for?? ?Greenest colored lettuce?? Call me a skeptic and a cynic, but I won?t believe the salad won any award, or at least not any award that counts, until I see it.

Tuscantastersemail8-111

My #1 choice for overused food buzzword. Tuscan. Tuscan. You see it everywhere. Tuscan this, Tuscan that. What is it supposed to mean? I think it is supposed to implant in my mind some sort of vision of a sunny Mediterranean villa, with the light glistening off the sea and open air markets of fresh produce ? the Tuscany region of Italy and the various Tuscan forms of cuisine from that area. But does what I am ordering off the menu have anything remotely to do with the Tuscany form of cuisine? And thus, more and more things on the menu bear the title ?Tuscan.? Deserved or not.

Tumblr M4Swq3Sgdz1Qzvrcgo1 1280

Advertising is a cruel game. Especially in the fast food chain restaurant business. People want, or expect, something new from these chains, all the time. And marketers and advertisers are challenged with coming up with these new food choices. One of the latest developments I have seen, mostly on pizza and Mexican fast food advertising is the proliferation of words to describe the food, or food titles that simply make no sense at all. What is ?green tomatillo sauce?? A Pico de Gallo? An Enchirito? What is a P?Zolo? Or a P?Zone? Who comes up with these words? They are tossed out there at you, in the fast-paced TV advertisement, usually with the food literally flying through the air too! They sound Mexican, or pizza-like, so they must be actual foods, right? Quick, did you see it? Flying across the TV screen through a perfect sheet of flowing vertical water. It was a P?Zone!
