This Smart Hub Helps Manage Your Home and Office From Anywhere

A smart living space behaves like this: doors auto-lock when no one's home, lights turn on when you wake up and pipes alert you when there's a leak.

SmartThings, an innovative technology project on Kickstarter, achieves just that. It's surging towards a goal of $250,000, with 27 days left before its deadline on the fundraising platform.

The wireless, smartphone-connected system makes the fully automated home a reality. Home dwellers can connect any lock, thermostat, light and kitchen appliance to the Internet. Everyday objects can become fully automated with a range of motion, moisture, open/close and presence sensors.

Using a SmartThings app, patrons will be able to monitor who's home, what's on and what's off. Connect your pet's collar to the smart hub, and it will alert you when Scruffy gets out of the backyard. Get a text when the dog's food bowl is empty. Or even remotely monitor an elderly relative in another state by tracking their activity around the house. See how it all works in the video above.

The Minnesota-based developers have been working to create a universal smart system that can be applied to any device. The possibilities are endless. The SmartThings hardware and software are open-source, so developers can continue manipulating the physical world as we know it.
